They sleep at least 20 hours a day
Have no body fat as they eat a low calorie diet
They pee & poo once a week
Mating takes a maximum of 15 seconds
That’s all your sloth facts from Costa Rica, where we learned that they aren’t really lazy just more energy efficient!
We took a taxi tour from the dock to include a river tour, city tour and stop at a banana plantation, we asked to add on the Sloth Sanctuary and agreed a good price
Standing on a floating platform while locals loaded shopping into a boat and back packers loaded rucksacks we really thought we’d made another mistake, but our tiny little boat arrived and we were only ones on it. It was just like you see on TV, we sailed right into the reeds, under trees, into mangrove and tiny streams. We saw iguana, howler monkeys, egrets, kingfishers, herons and of course sloths. We were extremely privileged to see a mummy & baby sloth quite low in the trees
Try as he might our guide could not find us a crocodile but he made up for it with a high speed drive back to the platform where thankfully there was someone to help us out
Definitely the highlight of the day, if you do only one thing in Costa Rica do the river tour
At the banana plantation we learned that you can get 5 years out of a banana tree with careful management and we saw many beautiful beaches on the way to the sloth sanctuary
Travelling in a little canoe we did indeed see a crocodile thankfully he wasn’t in the slightest bit interested in us. Our guide here was pretty hopeless, he managed to point out one river turtle and the following visit into the sanctuary was very informative, see the facts above, but sooooooo unbelievably hot!
You can no longer hold any animals in Costa Rica so seeing them in their pens in the sanctuary is as close as you can get, however one was in the tree above the swings in the park opposite the ship so you really don’t have to travel far to see one
