Lows & Highs

Saturday was my low day, at least that’s how it started!  I’d planned to get out of the city but after all the walking I’d done I didn’t really fancy the hills of Toledo

Grabbed a quick breakfast, can’t remember where then took a wander around town, had read about San Gines the best Churros & Chocolate in Madrid so stopped by, but although good Choc & Churros aren’t really my thing plus this was the first place I’d felt odd being alone

If I ever go again – remember – pay at any till go to the area you want to sit in, it’s massive & rambling and wait to be seated

Headed back to hotel for a rest & a think!  Of course the coffee machine wasn’t working, of course my room wasn’t made up – stuff this I lay on the bed anyway

Principe Pio had excellent wifi, so was able to discover I wouldn’t make the next train to Toledo and the later one would get me there at 4pm, a bit late…..

Was really feeling sorry for myself by this time, when in comes the chap to make up my room, he spoke no English & wasn’t taking no for an answer so out I stomped!

The Madrid tourist pass is excellent & I hopped on a train to Atocha thinking I’d  give the last art gallery a go then maybe take advantage of free evening entrance to Prado as the Thyssen Bournemisza was small – WOW it may be small by Madrid standards, but it is perfectly formed!!!

Loved the art, mostly small sizes you could imagine (dream of) in your home, loved the coloured walls & the almost non gallery feel, stood between 2 Monet & a Rembrant so moved I was trying not to cry, like a lone idiot!

It starts with the oldest work at the top and works its way down to the most modern, loved the Lichtenstein on the ground floor!

There were 3 temporary exhibits, Weyth – excellent, a photography exhibition in the style of one of the Weyths using some of the same models which was great, one young chap about 8 or 9 was particularly captivated by the female nudes and finally the Madrid Realists – with a queue over an hour long to get in, I hit the museum cafe instead!  The call buttons were awesome!

Left just before closing time but picked up a pocket museum guide and of course some pencils

Definitely the best of the 3 Galleries for me, so glad I went as it really turned my day round and treated myself to a very healthy smoothie on the way back to the hotel
